When you get mail from your local funeral home....
I get the USPS daily digest each day, which shows pictures of all the mail coming to our house. Today as I was getting my morning underway, I saw something that said “To the Kachman Family” and it was from a funeral home in Marshall. I have to say, for a second, I thought, did I miss a memo?
I got it from the mailbox this afternoon and it was a survey! It was also a gentle reminder about life and how we are not going to be here forever. Yesterday, a well known radio personality, Rush Limbaugh, announced he has advanced stage lung cancer. In his announcement, he also stated that he has had a deeply personal relationship with God. So here you have a guy, who is well set financially, seemingly has everything he needs, and gets the news that many of us have heard directly, or through a relative or friend...”we found cancer.” It is a snap of cold water hitting your face hard, and it reminds us that none are exempt from what will come for us all (unless Jesus comes back before then!)
But is death it for us? Not a chance! As Christians we are told, promised, that we have eternal life. Jesus demonstrated His willingness to sacrifice His life for us, knowing what waited for Him. The Apostles, all willing and ready, to be martyred, because they knew what was just over the horizon.
Death, whether you are rich and famous, poor and unknown, or someplace in between, will come for us....but He has overcome that! Isn’t that awesome! We no longer have to feel the sting of death because Jesus has crushed it! “Oh death where is your sting?!”
There are many around us that have not heard that promise though. For them, death is real, death is finality, death is full of the unknown. Brothers and sisters, let’s bring them the Hope of Jesus Christ!
““Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.”
John 14:1-2 NASB
These words still ring true for us. Take a moment, close your eyes, envision Jesus saying this to you. Find peace in it.
